After graduating high school I didn’t go to college right away. My family were going through some tough times back then.

My parents were separated. My mom went abroad and my father, who was a gambling addict, lived with his mom. He was jobless for sometime and later on got a job as an ambulance driver in a county hospital but his salary was very small he could hardly give us weekly allowance.

My mom was supporting a family of 6 – me, my brother, 2 cousins, my grandma and an aunt. She had a lot on her shoulder. So I decide that I need to grow up right there and then. I looked for a job and got accepted at Wendy’s at 17.

That was my first job – as a newbie you start at the bottom. First you will be cleaning the floor a lot and doing the tables. After awhile you will work at the burger station and then after sometime you can then become the cashier’s shadow– running around and assisting her. When you have finally learned everything you need to know– you will be given the privilege to start learning to work on the POS machine.

I’ll tell you, being a cashier is not the best job in a fast food chain. It comes with a lot of responsibility. There would be times that you could make a mistake in giving change to your customer but somebody could also steal money from your cash register without knowing it.

I worked as a cashier too while studying in London. Wearing a stupid brown coloured uniform, the guy I liked never looked at me once. Those were the days....the past makes us strong...

I hear you, girl. Not. Easy.

My first job was in a manufacturing warehouse. Packaging shampoo, sealing envelopes, blah blah blah.

But it was under the table - so my first official job was at Taco Bell. Talk about a humbling experience! Told my boys I want them to start off in fast food so that they can appreciate the work involved - it'd be good for them!
